British Championship Underway
This year’s British Championship, in Hull, starts today. You can read more about it in Leonard Barden’s article in the Financial Times and follow the games live via a Lichess Broadcast.
The first round pairings in the main Championship are interesting in terms of juniors and local players:
- Shreyas Royal (IM) v Bodhana Sivanandan (WIM), two of England’s best junior prospects – you might recall Bodhana making national headlines this year
- Ethan Pang (CM), the world’s youngest ever 2200 Elo rated player) takes on GM Luke McShane (former child prodigy)
- Suffolk-based Alan Merry (IM) is seeded 13th
- Richard Pert (IM), former Suffolk junior, now involved with Robin and Essex chess ) is seeded 16th
- Andy Lewis (FM) who has helped coach Suffolk juniors in-person and online is seeded 38
Hopefully this tournament will inspire some of the Suffolk juniors to take part or visit a future British Championship one day.
