Junior success at Martlesham
A total of 16 juniors and 14 adults took part in the final Martlesham Heath Sunday afternoon blitz event of this year.
The winner (with one round to spare!) was Volodymyr Bundzylo, a promising junior from Ipswich, who scored a perfect eight wins from eight games.
One of the main aims of the Martlesham tournaments is to support grassroots chess and is a great event for any player taking part in their first ever tournament. This year, Jude Prosser, a new member of the Suffolk Junior Chess online club, proved this to be true scoring a total of three wins.
Organiser, IM Dagne Ciuksyte, also expressed delight “seeing junior players playing friendly games and having fun”. It’s also quite common in tournaments for participants to socialise between rounds, often playing alternative chess formats either individually or as a team. Dagne noticed that “Atomic chess contributed to the fun part”.
The fundraiser tournament raised over £300 for Debenham High School.
The Martlesham tournaments were also fortunate to have a very experienced tournament controller and international arbiter, John Wickham, who kept a record of the results on the Chess Results website.
Dagne is also offering coaching/training for juniors over the summer and will run a workshop for beginners on Wednesday 5th August in Ipswich. Visit dagnechess.co.uk for more information and contact details.
